I never liked the PATRIOT Act. It didn't matter to me if it came from Bush or Obama. It always came off as government overreach.
The PATRIOT Act is a good example of partisan reversal. When Bush signed it into law, Democrats insisted that it was one of the worst pieces of legislation in American history. Republicans defended the law on the grounds that you had nothing to fear if you did nothing wrong.
The PATRIOT Act expired under Obama. What did Obama do? He signed the key provisions right back into law. Suddenly, Republicans started referring to the law as overreach. Democrats insisted that you had nothing to fear if you did nothing wrong.
Online discussions were especially shocking. If a Democrat saw any criticism of what they previously called one of the worst pieces of legislation in American history, they would respond by accusing the person commenting as a hypocrite.
Democrats were acting like complete hypocrites. How did they defend their hypocrisy? By attacking the hypocrisy of Republicans. This has become a common tactic of the Democratic party.
When COVID-19 hit, Democratic governors were quick to embrace an authoritarian response. Instead of giving us the best information so we could make informed decisions, they flat out told us how we had to live our lives. They shut down businesses that they arbitrarily decided were non-essential. They mandated the use of masks and social distancing. Even before vaccines were officially approved by the FDA, they pushed vaccine mandates.
Early on, a number of protests against government overreach emerged. Democrats were quick to insist that the constitutional right to peaceful protests was suspended during a pandemic. For the most part, the protests faded.
After the death of George Floyd, Democrats completely reversed their arguments about protests. They had every right to protest during a pandemic. They even ensured that government-imposed constraints had to support the ongoing protests.
Eventually, anti-authoritarian protests resumed. This was especially noticeable when Canadian truckers protested vaccine mandates (not the vaccine itself as many dishonest news sources claimed). Suddenly, Democrats, who defended a number of riots, insisted that the honking went too far. How did they defend their hypocrisy? By insisting that these protesters were being hypocritical. Some conservatives had previously argued that protesters should not be allowed to impede traffic. The trucker protest did just that.
"My body, my choice." This has long been a pro-choice talking point. Those who oppose vaccine mandates have started using this phrase to point out the hypocrisy of vaccine mandates. How have Democrats responded to these comments? By insisting that it's hypocritical to point out their hypocrisy. In this case, it's not hypocritical for the pro-life community to use that phrase. Their views revolve around the idea that a fetus is not their body.
