Reform

After the death of George Floyd, people started calling for police departments across the country to be defunded. I'm not a big fan of these kinds of knee-jerk reactions. I'm open to change, but change should be based on ideas for what we can do better rather than out of anger. Anger can cloud ideas, sometimes resulting in making things worse.

Of course, there's more to this world than race. If we really want change, we should be pursuing the best options, not just the best options for those who are black. Although I shouldn't have to state this, wanting what's best for everyone is not permission for anything legitimately racist. Admittedly, it's hard to fully nail down the implications of race on law enforcement since the media is providing us with an obviously skewed narrative.

Let's expand on the possibility of change in America. Over the years, our government has become more and more oppressive. There are three major crises that I keep calling out. These are areas where we desperately need some form of change.

Reform education
Actually, we need to completely replace our educational system if we want to deal with our educational crisis. The foundation of our schools is dependent on suppressing education and independent thought. They push over-conformity that has contributed to polarization. There is nothing about our current system that can be salvaged.

Reform the media
All major media outlets have an agenda. With Fox News, they are pushing a conservative agenda. With CNN, ABC, NBC, CBS, the Associated Press, the New York Times, and the Washington Post, they are pushing a liberal agenda. All these outlets are selective in choosing their stories. They inject opinion into articles that should be fact-based. They go off topic. In many cases, they push outright lies. There are no reliable information sources in America. This has led to a serious informational crisis that we need to address.

Reform the government
We have a two-party system, and the two parties are more alike than they are different. They both look for loopholes to cheat the system. They both care more about representing their parties than representing the people. They both convince followers to change their beliefs to better match those of their preferred party. Many of us end up voting for the lesser of two evils, which means that we vote for people that we view as evil. Our governmental crisis will continue until we find a way to put people above parties.

Yes, reform law
While this is not one of the three big crises that I keep mentioning, it's undeniable that our country has a high incarceration rate. This is a problem even without looking at race. We're clearly doing something wrong, and we should welcome change. Reforming is not the same as defunding, but it absolutely should be possible to bring down our prison population, which would likely also provide savings to taxpayers.
