Dictionaries

Time for one of my stupidest posts to date, my views on dictionaries. Dictionaries attempt to explain what different words mean. They can be very helpful, but they are not perfect.

Quick. Define "the." This is a very simple word that we all know. Quite frankly, it's not an easy word to explain to people who already know what it means. If someone doesn't know what it means, will that person understand the definition?

To further complicate things, words change meanings. The purpose of a dictionary is to help people understand unfamiliar words. Finding a word in the dictionary doesn't necessarily reflect the usage someone encounters.

Again, this is one of my stupid posts. Dictionaries have value. Just don't assume that you can 100% rely on them.
