Right to be informed

When I mention fundamental human rights, I am generally referring to things that should not be taken from us. Information might seem contrary to this viewpoint, but it actually fits.

When it comes to the right to be informed, the media becomes an issue. They tend to think this right requires their involvement. After all, how can we be informed if nobody is providing us with information? Of course, there are many different types of information, and the media should never be the exclusive provider of any type of information.

The media comes to conclusions regarding what information they believe the public should know. Not all their information is factual, and their personal biases tend to skew decisions regarding which stories they cover.

The traditional media also pushes their perspectives too hard. The Associated Press is particularly problematic. If you want to read about a specific story they cover, you will find search results flooded with their perspectives. As a result, alternative viewpoints have been difficult to find.

The right to information has effectively been under attack by our media. The best thing that could happen in this area right now would be for the media to back off. This would allow valuable information to become easier to find.
