We have headed for the coast.
After all the dry weather, I couldn't resist singing songs of praise for the rain
for most of the drive. From the car, we already saw Crows, Gulls, Great Blue
Herons, Deer, a Rabbit, a Sheller's Jay, Starlings, Ravens, and maybe a
Flicker.
Our first stop took us to the
Leadbetter Unit of Willapa Bay National Wildlife Refuge and Leadbetter Point State
Park. We walked through the refuge, eventually cutting over to the Pacific
Ocean. We walked along the beach before heading back to the parking lot via the
State Park's beach access trail. We saw a Song Sparrow and maybe some Savannah
Sparrows. We could make out some Mallards in flight. We also spotted some ducks
in the distance, but we never got a good enough look for identification. We
caught some Brown Pelicans flying and landing on the North side of the refuge.
More were seen flying over the ocean. One of the more unusual components of the
walk was the Butterfly attacks. I had one land next to my face, and another
practically flew into my eye. It was late in the year for flowers, but we still
managed to find Asters/Daisies (like I know the difference), Thistles, Pearly
Everlasting We also encountered Crows, Gulls, Great Blue Herons, a Hawk, a
Douglas Squirrel, Caspian Terns, Gulls, Sandpipers, a Chipmunk, Chestnut-backed
Chickadees, and a Dragonfly.
Our next stop was at Cape
Disappointment State Park. For this particular walk, we were after the North
Head Lighthouse. While we weren't trying too hard to find birds, we ran into
some more Brown Pelicans. We also saw Cormorants, Gulls, a Crow, Surf Scoters,
and a Dragonfly. Flowers included Dandelions, Daisies, and Thistle.
Before camp, we had to make
one last stop. We couldn't go after one of the Cape Disappointment lighthouses
and not get the other. There was more of a trail for the Cape Disappointment
Lighthouse. We didn't see a whole lot (I should say identify since there were
actually a lot of birds in the water). We saw some more Brown Pelicans and
added some Vultures. Other critters include a Snail, a Crow, Dragonflies, a
Caterpillar, Butterflies, a Cormorant, and Gulls.
Since reaching our campground
(Twin Harbors State Park), we have added a Junco to our list.
Before I move on, I have an
IOU that I need to deal with. The clouds have done an excellent job of keeping
the evil fireball of death from pounding down on me. I have already thanked
them, but they deserve more than that. I have a simple request for anyone
reading. Praise the clouds for me.
NOTE: After looking through pictures, we can add Wigeons to the list of birds seen at Leadbetter.
