Climbing Wall

The Climbing Wall is primarily a rope climb. Children can put their feet on the wall as they head up (or possibly down). An image of Tahoma (Mount Rainier for non-natives) has been painted on the wall. I love that touch. When children reach the top, they can appreciate the fact that they just climbed “The Mountain.”

Parents might love this one. The Climbing Wall is around a corner and on the outside of the playground. They can easily watch their children unobstructed without other distracting components in the background. Even other children are unlikely to get in the way.

As for my usual safety message, I don’t think that this component is too bad because it’s not a very big climb. If they climb to the top of the rope rather than the top of the wall, there is potential for a bigger fall. There is a ledge. If they fall wrong, it might be possible to hit that ledge awkwardly. In a worse case scenario, the feet could miss the ledge and the head could hit. Personally, I think that most children will be pushing with their feet in a somewhat perpendicular angle to the wall. This would put them in a backwards leaning position, reducing the odds of the worst case scenario becoming reality.
