Democrats have been talking about impeachment from the moment that Trump was elected. What were the grounds? They didn't like him.
When the nature of a phone call between Trump and the president of the Ukraine emerged, the Democrats pounced. They insisted that this was an impeachable offense. If they could prove that Trump used aid as leverage to open investigations into unlikely Ukrainian interference in the 2016 election and a business that hired Hunter Biden, they could remove Trump from office.
Considering what recent presidents have gotten away with, I found their argument to be weak. I was also suspicious of the party that was looking for any excuse to impeach. For these reasons, I was skeptical of the Democrats and leaning against the inquiry. I try to keep an open mind. I would allow the Democrats an opportunity to change my mind. Instead, they went on to validate my concerns.
Admittedly, I'm not the best person to discuss Trump's impeachment. I didn't have the time to justify listening to all the testimony or reading transcripts. My information came almost exclusively from liberal news organizations.
When you look at the premise behind impeachment, there were always concerns. Hunter Biden was considered a political figure. As such, an investigation could influence the next election. Because of this, it was wrong for Trump to push for an investigation. Because of this, they had to investigate Trump to show that being a politician should not prevent an investigation.
You could say the reason for impeachment had hypocrisy embedded. When you take a wider look, things get worse. Barack Obama used executive orders as a means of circumventing Congress. Legally, the executive branch can't create laws. Obama abused his power to defy the checks and balances set out by the U.S. Constitution. Among the reasons the Democrats argued for impeachment were abuse of power, defiance of the Constitution, and defiance of the checks and balances. The supposedly squeaky clean Obama more clearly met these standards of impeachment than Trump.
Maybe the Democrats had a change of heart. Maybe they now recognize that these kinds of actions are wrong? Maybe not. Let's move closer to the present. Joe Biden was recorded talking about withholding aid in order to get the Ukrainians to fire a prosecutor. A lot of people compared Biden's actions to Trump's. They defended Biden based off motive. They insisted that the action might have been similar, but Biden's was trying to fight corruption. Trump was supposedly getting involved in an election. After this defense, Democrats have referred to the action, not the motive, as bribery and extortion.
Even looking forward, there are serious signs of hypocrisy. The Democrats never provided a solid explanation of how Trump's actions defy the Constitution. That hasn't stopped them from citing unconstitutional actions as a reason for impeachment. While this has gone on, every Democratic candidate for president has made promises that would require defiance of the Constitution. Do you want proof? Just look up the tenth amendment.
The Democrats never made a compelling argument that Trump's actions rise to the level of impeachment. They were so obsessed with proving that Trump pressured the Ukrainians for investigations that they forgot to make an actual case for impeachment. They threw something together in the final day by asking legal experts if it was impeachable. The Democrats made it clear that they picked their experts based on support rather than objective arguments. They went out of their way to shield bias from the public. Even with these protections, I didn't need to find a conservative source to establish bias for one of them.
"We three are unanimous." The Democrats fought most attempts by the Republicans to bring in their own expert. Most were rejected, but they allowed one. This expert made it clear that he did not like Trump, but viewed the case as too weak for impeachment. Three out of four were in agreement. Shockingly, one of the experts called by the Democrats insisted that the three out of four who were in agreement were unanimous. That's not how that word should be used, so why use it in such a deceptive manner? More than likely, it's because it's a stronger word. This expert was putting aside what was right in hopes of swaying opinions. Conveniently but not surprisingly, many news sites turned this saying into a headline while downplaying the existence of a fourth expert.
The Democrats have proven that they are full of hate. It was hate that fueled the investigations, and it was hate that clouded their judgement. They made a weak case and proved that they want to lower the bar for impeachment simply because they hate Trump. This lowered bar is intended to last only for Trump. The next time a Democrat is in office, Trump's actions and similar actions will no longer be considered impeachable.
