I have long insisted that we should all strive to evolve as individuals. For various reasons, I have not been following my own advice. This includes problems that I have with the response to change. As one of my many self-evaluations, I have decided to look into what kinds of changes I really should make in my life. Unfortunately, obstacles will likely be too much for me to overcome.
Traditions have their uses. This provides a way to connect multiple generations. Even within a generation, being able to revisit the same idea at regular intervals can have benefits.
Some traditions should be maintained. Looking in the other direction, traditions through the end of time should not be the same as they are today. Some traditions need to go away. Others need to be established.
As someone who is desperate for more control over my own life, my primary focus should not be on what traditions I want to maintain from others. I would be a lot more comfortable creating new traditions.
There actually is one thing that I have been doing in recent years that could be considered a new tradition. Each year, I have been making a photo book featuring my big vacation for the year. Actually, I shouldn't say each year. I have had some recent years without a vacation. When the book is finished, I buy a copy for family members and give it to them as an Xmas present.
In all honesty, I'm not really a big Xmas fan. This is more of a family holiday, and this makes a lot of sense for timing. I'm not sure the timing is ideal from my perspective.
There are things that I like about Xmas. There's also a side of me that thinks Xmas gives people an excuse to justify how they treat others 364.25 days out of a typical year. Perhaps I should start a tradition that spreads out the parts of Xmas that I like. This doesn't mean having to find gifts to give every day of the year, but maybe I could create a giving budget. When the budget is sufficient to fund what I want to give, I can buy, wrap, and offer gifts such as my books.
I have had other ideas that could be thought of as possible new traditions such as celebrating a Learner Appreciation Week and an Educational Rights Day, but I have a confession to make. I honestly haven't spent much time thinking about what traditions I would like to start. Perhaps this should be a project to pursue in the future.
