Over the years, the Democrats have become more and more authoritarian. The good news for them is that they control the media. They have convinced Americans that it's authoritarian to oppose government mandates.
While the Democrats have embraced extremism, Republicans have taken on the role of the resistance. Unfortunately, resisting Democrats is not the same as trying to offer something better. Republicans have embraced an anti-Democrat viewpoint to a fault.
To make matters worse, the Republicans are more talk than anything right now. They automatically oppose anything the Democrats propose, sometimes embracing downright absurd positions. When possible, they fight to keep liberal legislation from passing, but they never try to undo any of the damage. Over time, the Democrats are getting whatever they want. This is why I sometimes refer to Republicans as the enablers.
Then came Trump. Trump used to be a Democrat, and he never truly embraced the Republican party (although he pretended to and tried to pander to a questionable base). He brought liberal tactics to the Republican party, moving the antics of the Republican party closer to those of the Democrats.
Republicans still maintain their mindless opposition to Democrats, but they are acting more and more like the Democrats. Most people don't see it because the Democrats have nearly total control over the schools and media. Regardless, we need better than slowing the adoption of bad policy. We need a party that genuinely wants to do good for American citizens.
