One of the trickier
rights to explain from my list of fundamental human rights is the right to be
heard. Obviously, we can't demand that every single person must listen to
billions of different voices.
Maybe I should have
worded things differently. When I talk about the right to be heard, I am
talking about ensuring that individuals have outlets to share important
thoughts.
If you feel that
there is a serious problem in this world that needs to be addressed and nobody
seems to be addressing it, you should be able to spread the word. This is
similar in concept to freedom of speech, but merely preventing censorship on
speech is insufficient. If there is no way for a person outside of influence to
be heard, many important pieces of information will be lost. It would be far
better to have a tolerant and cooperative society than a society that can keep
the population ignorant and uninformed.
