Vacation 2016 - Pushing through Wyoming

We have anticipated that our return trip would be trickier than the way to Colorado. We gave ourselves one less day (although we shaved off a day on our way out to make them equal) even though this route is longer with more to do. Perhaps even more noteworthy is the fourth of July weekend. With our looser plans than most people, we really couldn’t make reservations. We made an exception for the fourth since we have a solid target for our final stop.

To compensate for our tougher route, we decided to push hard today. Wyoming was the weakest stretch of the trip. We are more interested in stopping in Idaho and Oregon. We felt that it would not be in our best interests to make any stops today. This would give us more time to pursue our more interesting targets in the upcoming days.

We were thinking of stopping in Western Wyoming. Unfortunately, our camping book is seriously lacking in this area. We knew of a town that had camping, but the town was all we knew. We drove through the town and never found any signs for a campground. There were hotels in the area as well, but we realized something. We were earlier than we anticipated. The next place we were confident in finding a place to stay was in Idaho. We were maybe a couple hours out, but this would have actually put us closer to when we intended to stop for the day.

We headed for Montpelier. Before we got there, we ruled out a forest campground because our notes indicated that they had no bathroom. We suspected other camping options in the area and knew there were hotels. We were about to turn into a Super 8 when we saw a sign for a KOA. We wanted to save some money, so we turned to the KOA. When we got there, we were told they ran out of tent sites. All they had left was a cabin. We figured the cabin would be cheaper than a hotel, so that is where we will be spending the night.
