June 2015 Weather Summary

It's time for me to update the Washingtonian Weather Index for our worst June ever. Oh, wait. I should check the numbers before making that claim... yup.

There was never any question about whether or not this was our worst June. The real question was by how much. Of course, this awful June received a little bit of international attention. The biggest event ever in the South Sound, the U.S. Open, turned out to take place during our record-setting month (although the Weather Index is based off of SeaTac).

Let's start the reason the month was so miserable by discussing the temperatures. The last six days of the month (with no relief in sight for as far as the forecast is concerned) were in the 80's or higher. The high hasn't been as low as 75 since the 19th, and our last day in the 60's was on the 12th. Keep in mind that I seriously struggle with temperatures in the 70's. I also prefer temperatures cooler than the 60's, but that's tough to find this time of year.

Not surprisingly, this was our hottest June ever recorded. This also shows in the table below that reflects the rating when only factoring in the temperature. To make things a little more interesting, I was out of state for the first two days of the month. Those were the days with the best temperatures. If those two days were removed to reflect my personal June, the temperature would have scored just 53.46% for the month.

You might also notice that the score isn't even close. Of course, the Washingtonian Weather Index factors in moisture as well. June was way too dry. Similar to the temperatures, our best days conveniently occurred while I was on vacation. Of our lowly 0.23" of rain during the month, 0.03" fell while I was actually here. Without those days, we would have scored just 37.85%, which would have been the 8th worst month ever recorded. It would have also been the only month outside of July and August listed among the 10 worst months ever. Again, this was our worst June by a wide margin.
