Penalty Values

The NHL's zero tolerance penalties didn't seem to include legitimately dirty plays. There is still a ton of filth that goes completely unpunished. By comparison, we are seeing more crapshoot penalties without any legitimate wrongdoing. Running someone into the boards after putting the victim in a vulnerable position is considered to be lesser than a player stepping on your stick and tripping.

This, of course, benefits the dirtier teams because they are the ones who make their penalties count. Zero tolerance has had far more of an impact on the cleaner teams because the new penalties have been for insignificant incidents. The filth still has not been addressed. We have even seen teams like the Blackhawks and Bruins win the Stanley Cup by playing like collections of thugs.

The league needs to crack down on cheap shots and ease up on crapshoot penalties. When you are comparing two minutes for chance versus zero minutes for a play guaranteed to injure, you have a serious problem. The NHL needs to sort out penalties and ensure that dangerous plays are punished in a more severe manor than the crapshoots.
