Simplifying life… or not

One of the appeals of technological development is that we can simplify. It’s a lot easier to have machinery designed to make something than to have to hire numerous people who are less efficient and accurate at the task. This simplification can translate to more goods made for less money. This should make everything more affordable, allowing us to have more without having to do as much. Of course, all of this is in theory.

There are a lot of people who have to live hectic schedules to afford the necessities. We are also dealing with a shift in expectations. We have to work harder to develop expertise in increasingly mundane tasks. Machinery has had minimal effect on prices while shrinking the job market.

Technology can be a wonderful thing, but we have screwed it up. Our lives have not become more simplistic. More importantly, quality of life has been deteriorating. While most of our problems are not related to technology, I think low-tech generations were better off.
