Accessibility of Hockey

There is no question that hockey is the least popular among the four major sports. Why? It’s actually quite simple. Hockey is the least accessible.

I might deviate from how people normally tend to think. Playing a sport and watching a sport are two different things. I have never been on ice skates in my life, but I still enjoy watching hockey. Of course, that’s real hockey. The crap that the NHL has replaced hockey with does not carry the same appeal.

For most people, if they don’t understand playing a sport, they can’t understand watching it. Where the sport is accessible, it is extremely popular. For the bulk of the US, people aren’t interested.

All the gimmicks that the NHL has resorted to fail to address the real problems. One of the reasons that hockey can’t compete with others is because the sport is inaccessible. Changing the rules doesn’t fix that. All it does is prove that the league is clueless as to what their problems really are.
