Witnessing Wacky Washington Winter Weather

Our stretch of bizarre weather is starting to get a little less wacky, but it’s not over yet. Over the weekend, we picked up two or three inches of snow. The following couple of days, we had flurries but no accumulations. Then we got a half of foot of new snow on Wednesday. Of course, I already ranted about that Washingtonian Blizzard.

The forecast originally called for warming temperatures and a switch to rain Wednesday evening. We had a switch to drizzle, but we didn’t warm up. Other than the snow sticking around a little longer, that change in forecast wasn’t too bad.

The big problem came on Thursday. It was supposed to be warm and wet. Instead, it was cold and wet. We did get rain, but it was freezing rain. Where I live, ice did manage to take down some fairly large branches. Most noteworthy being three branches from a Madrona. There’s probably more, but I was waiting on the snow and ice to melt before getting a closer look at the mess.

We started the day with a little more freezing rain that we weren’t supposed to get, but it wasn’t as bad as yesterday. We are finally starting to warm up. We are also expecting some wind. This means that we will have more branches falling as well as quite a bit of flooding in the next day or two. After that, we will probably be back to normal (wet but not icy).

Walking on ice on top of fairly deep snow is not the easiest thing in the world. I haven’t had any long walks during these storms, but I can feel it more than my usual 10+ mile walks. I have to be deliberate in my steps (lift foot, move foot forward, put foot down), and it appears that the changes in walking mechanics uses different muscles.

I have been holding off on picture uploads until the weird weather is over. Don’t expect any Flickr updates for at least a day or two after mother nature goes back to her normal routine, and who knows when that will be.
