I refuse to allow social acceptability to hinder my thought process. Because of this, I can see things that no one else can. I can see problems that elude others, and I have ideas that could help solve these problems. This has led me to one of my favorite sayings. Given the opportunity, I could change the world.
Society has developed a serious disconnect between ability and opportunity. There's no question that I have valuable strengths. It's opportunity that has eluded me. Quite frankly, a lot of this is my fault. I have areas of weakness that are far more impactful on opportunity that my areas of strength. In particular, I am horrible at selling myself.
There are people out there with similar obstacles who have found ways to overcome them. For example, credentials are become increasingly important for opportunity, but there are periodic stories of individuals who succeed with less than I have obtained. These people are consistently better than I am in social skills and finding the right words. These are two areas in which I simply can't compete.
We all have unique sets of strengths and weaknesses. I'm proud of my strengths. Unfortunately, my combination of strengths and weaknesses is a horrible fit for the modern world. As much as I hate saying this, social skills, much like credentials, are far more vital to success than ability or willingness to make meaningful contributions.
