A new page, Web 3.0>Role of Social Networking, has been added to my Social Networking+ notebook for My Idea Outlet. The contents can be found below.
There are a lot of people out there explaining what they think will web 3.0 will be about. I have a confession to make. Even I have been looking at what we will view as web 3.0.
Most of the ideas I have seen relate to devices. For example, I have seen signs that people think that virtual reality (or head-mounted displays) will be the defining characteristic of web 3.0. Personally, I have been looking more at functionality.
There are two things that I think will ultimately definitely web 3.0. The first is modularity. Web content development will be disconnected from web design. This will allow web developers more flexibility in how content is presented, including variable portrayals of the same content. To an extent, modularity already exists, but web 3.0 will embrace numerous standardized content types that can easily be displayed by third party websites.
The other big change with web 3.0 will be communication between websites. Instead of API's specific to websites, protocols will be developed to allow various forms of communications to exist between websites. This will allow multi-site friends lists that can be updated through a single interface, advanced commenting and chatting systems that are not reliant on maintaining an account with a specific business or organization, streamlined logins, and more.
I expect social networking to act as the heart of web 3.0. Most content will be stored on some form of social networking, including on-premises solutions. The social network will control who can access content and how the content is accessed. For many items, the social network will open up discussions. After the modular content types and cross-website protocols are properly established, additional uses for the content will emerge. I intend to explore and explain a number of these options.
