When people talk about fake news, they frequently like to talk about outright lies. In other words, people are looking out for reports and articles that knowingly provide false information purely for the sake of manipulating viewers and readers. There are some obscure websites and social networking pages created entirely for the purpose of spreading these lies. Mainstream media sources are generally a little different. Most of their lies have some truth behind them, and they mix lies with facts and opinions.
A good example of a mainstream lie was when NBC was caught editing the George Zimmerman 911 tape to convince viewers that Zimmerman spontaneously brought race into the discussion. They lied about what the tape said, but the tape itself was real.
Keep in mind that this series of blog posts are about deceptive news, not just fake news. Most mainstream tactics do not involve flat out lying to the public. I will explain some of these tactics in later posts.
