I'm not a writer, and I hate repeating myself. Unfortunately, Trump has convinced me that I need to go back to what I have already said about him.
Donald Trump is a Democrat pretending to be a Republican. He is trying to pander to a Republican base, but he doesn't know what Republicans actually believe. When he gets it wrong, partisan conformity kicks in. The entire party changes their views to match Trump's mistakes.
I brought this up during the pandemic. Trump insisted that he would take responsibility for reopening the economy, undermining state rights. Some people praised him for convincing the Democrats to momentarily acknowledge the tenth amendment. I didn't view this as a brilliant move. I viewed it as Trump simply not understanding Republican support for state rights.
As you probably figured out from the title of this post, I wanted to bring up Trump's announcement of the federal government taking a ten percent stake in Intel. For years, Republicans have been attacking the evils of socialism. The government taking ten percent ownership in a business like Intel is definitely a socialist move. In fact, this was a rare instance in which Trump was praised by socialist Bernie Sanders.
I'm seeing a lot of Trump supporters making up excuses. Socialist policies are suddenly acceptable because we've taken similar actions in the past. Keep in mind that the Government Motors jokes were primarily coming from Republicans. Gaining ownership is better than just handing them money. Does anyone honestly believe that true conservatives want the government playing that big of a role in business operations? I have even heard the argument that it's a matter of national security. That's just one big stretch. It's time to stop rationalizing hypocrisy.
Further repeating myself, I primarily side with Republicans in elections because I have bigger issues with Democrats. One of my biggest criticisms of Trump is that he's bringing what I hate about the Democrats to the Republican party. Donald Trump is turning the Republican party into the second Democratic party. I am certainly open to change within the Republican party, but this is not the type of change I want to see.
We need to stop referring to Trump's supporters as MAGA Republicans since he is clearly not a Republican. Personally, I think MAGA Democrats would be more accurate. Democrats would never support that terminology. Perhaps I have an idea for new terminology that Democrats and non-conforming Republicans can get behind. Let's start referring to Trump's supporters as MAGA conformists.
