As I keep saying, I hate social networking, but I see a ton of potential. We are still a long way from that potential, and in some ways, we are getting worse.
If you know me, you know that I reject partisan conformity. Most people do not. We have seen increasing polarization, and people are trying harder than ever before to avoid viewpoints that are different from their own.
X has gotten a lot of attention in recent years. It has a reputation for its supposed conservative slant. I generally avoid looking at recommended posts. This is because it is full of liberal misinformation. I already read some of that, but I need alternative perspectives as well.
Because of the conservative reputation, a lot of liberals are moving to BlueSky. This is not because they can better find the information they want on that site, but because they don't want to be exposed to conservative perspectives. Simply put, they are pursuing an echo chamber.
There's a big oversight that people like that are making. If liberal perspectives move off of X, what's left? Eventually, conservatives will outnumber liberals on that platform. Because this validates the criticism, more liberals will leave. This could eventually lead to X becoming a conservative echo chamber.
If social network users all end up in echo chambers, we run into even bigger problems. Without exposure to alternative perspectives, we increase political polarization. Our country becomes even further divided.
What about people like me? I don't want to be forced to manage more accounts just to see more than one perspective. We either need social networks that host diverse perspectives, or we need some sort of aggregation site. Considering the limitations most social networks impose on external access, I'm not sure aggregation will work at this time. We need options.
