I have long insisted that we should all strive to evolve as individuals. For various reasons, I have not been following my own advice. This includes problems that I have with the response to change. As one of my many self-evaluations, I have decided to look into what kinds of changes I really should make in my life. Unfortunately, obstacles will likely be too much for me to overcome.
If you have been to this blog before, you might already be aware of my bizarre relationship with sports. I have been watching sports in recent years but probably shouldn't. I struggle with lack of control over my own life. Although watching sports can provide a distraction from my problems, watching ultimately leads to a feeling of helplessness.
From a mental perspective, I could probably handle playing sports a lot better than I can handle watching. This is because playing would give me at least some control. Losing while knowing that there are ways to improve my game should be easier for me to handle than losing accompanied by helplessness.
More obvious than the mental benefits, physical activity provides benefits to physical health. This includes improving strength and endurance. People who are physically active are also less susceptible to a number of health problems.
I should also mention that I don't like how we currently handle sports. I have long insisted that sports should focus on recreation first. One of my biggest frustrations with sports right now is that I actually have some ideas. It might be easier to promote those ideas if I felt like I could actually participate.
Another side to my dislike of our current model is that sports really don't feel like they're for me. Most opportunities for people my age are primarily aimed at people who played when they were younger. We simply don't have good opportunities available for people who don't already know what they're doing.
I could reiterate my issues with change, but I would prefer to end with another concern. Although I haven't embraced anything unhealthy in my life, I also haven't embraced anything healthy. Going from walking to serious activity might not be a very good idea. Although I want more physical activity in my life, I'm honestly not sure if my body could take it.
