I’m not going to go into a whole lot of detail regarding wildlife today. Let’s just say that we saw bison, robins, elk, ravens, killdeer, sparrows, chipmunks, juncos, marmots, ground squirrels, an eagle, a tanager, and cowbirds. The reason that I’m not going into details is due to the nature of today’s activities. We were looking for several easy trips along the West side of Yellowstone. Detailing where everything was seen seemed like a lot of unnecessary work.
Today’s first stop was Norris Geyser Basin. We tried to shoot the bulk of the geysers and hot springs that conveniently gave us names. I’m sure we missed some, especially when the steam blew towards us.
Our next stop was Artists Paintpots. This was another region of obvious geothermal activity. We saw boiling mud and water as well as some different coloration.
We took a break from inhaling sulfur by taking Firehole Canyon Drive to Firehole Falls. We took pictures from several different angles. I hope that my shots were good enough. After all, I was the one using the neutral density filter.
We tried to visit Fountain Paint Pots and Biscuit Basin. Both of these locations were busy and lacking parking. While we could have followed the leads of others, we decided not to park where we really shouldn’t.
Black Sand Basin did have enough parking for us, so we stopped. We took several pictures of the activity, particularly the two bubbling and spurting geysers.
We also figured that nobody would let us live with ourselves if we didn’t visit Old Faithful. We went to the Visitors Center, checked the predicted eruption time, and watched a short documentary. After the documentary, we felt that there wasn’t enough time to grab the tripod. We headed to the crowded geyser and started our wait. Unfortunately, there were people in our way. It looked like there was no way for me to shoot the geyser without people in the frame. Then, a kid did us a big favor and asked for a spot in front. The crowd moved around a bit, and the only people in front of me were sitting. I managed to get a large sequence of pictures. Hopefully, one or two will look tolerable.
EDIT: We also saw Yellow-rumped Warblers and Mallards on this day.
