My Idea Outlet: Social Networking+>Web 3.0>Modular Content

A new page, Web 3.0>Modular Content, has been added to my Social Networking+ notebook for My Idea Outlet. The contents can be found below.

In a sense, social networking already embraces modularity. Each post you make is a unique item. This items can be shared. Depending on the social network, this could be by a re-share system, permalinks, embedding, or other related ideas. Posts are frequently identified by a type such as a text, picture, or link.

Once we break down walls between websites, modularity will become more important. There will be more content being shared between sites. Many websites will run algorithms to establish content to embed of the right type. This will not just be posts and pictures, and many will be manipulated for aesthetical and branding purposes.

Widgets have been developed as substitutes for many important types of content. These will be converted and new types will emerge. This can include weather conditions and forecasts, sports scores, news headlines, relevant pictures and videos, calendar items, crosswords and other puzzles, chatrooms, and more.

To get the most out of this type of content, I expect a framework to emerge. This framework will provide a common structure for all of the modular content. It will likely provide a form of container for the primary data and associated metadata.

Within this model, numerous content types will be defined. This will further establish the structure of the data (text, video, image, lists, data streams, etc.) and the metatags that can be used. A lot of these types will be defined by an organization maintaining standards, but there should also be flexibility for organizations to create custom components.

Once the content types are defined, websites will be able to decide how to use them. In some cases, they will be looking for specific content types to display. Other sites will work more on a principal of aggregation. These sites need to establish how each content type will display and where. It is unlikely that any website will support 100% of all content. In these cases, the unsupported content will usually remain unsupported. In some cases, an alternative form of a content type may be provided. For example, a weather or crossword item could provide an image that can be used.
