There has been a lot of talk lately about the Democrats campaigning for the 2020 presidential election. Most of what I have been hearing is concerning. This includes early indications that the Democrats will be peddling hate for their personal gains.
When Howard Schultz, a man with no realistic hope to win the presidency, talked about the possibility of running as an independent, the Democrats went nuts. They complained that Schultz could give the election to Donald Trump. This is technically a valid concern, but it was framed horribly. They didn't insist that it put their party at an unfair disadvantage. They went straight to criticizing their likely opponent.
Another area of concern related to the type of Democrats who have announced their candidacy. Many are extremists who have proven that they have hate in their hearts. Considering our string of divisive presidents, we do not need to elect another president right now who will fuel division. We need someone who will bring this country closer together.
We shouldn't forget how Trump won the Republican nomination. He entered a crowded field and used harsh rhetoric and controversy to grab attention for himself. Most Republicans developed strong opinions of Trump. Some thought his personality was a refreshing change. Others couldn't stand him. In the primaries, everyone who liked Trump supported him. Everyone who hated him split votes between the other candidates.
It is looking like a crowded field for the Democrats. Extremism and controversy could very well be necessary for candidates to make names for themselves. The least problematic candidates will likely split votes. Like Trump, a divisive personality will probably be needed for the eventual nominee.
In all honesty, I think there is more room for hope from the Republican party right now. It's not a common occurrence for a president to fall short of a nomination for reelection, but I have never seen a better opportunity to make an exception. Considering how Trump was nominated and his poor polling numbers, his nomination is uncertain. Right now, I would say that it's more likely that the Republicans will nominate a decent candidate than the Democrats.
