Steve Clevenger

I have been discussing freedom of speech from an ethical perspective, and I want to share an obvious example of my views. His name is Steve Clevenger, and he used to be a catcher for the Seattle Mariners. He sent a tweet critical of Black Lives Matter that essentially ended his Major League career.

The tweet in question in no way involved the Seattle Mariners. There were no indications that his words harmed the team in any way. His words should have had absolutely no impact on his employment.

The Mariners criticized Clevenger's comments and immediately suspended him. They effectively established that saying things away from the job that is not in line with the views of the front office was punishable. Not surprisingly, the team let him go.

This turned out to be a great example of an employer trying to control an employee away from the job. Employers should not take an active role in their employees' personal lives if they can help it. The Mariners definitely crossed a line when they took action against Clevenger.
